Editorial Book Review:

By SM Harrison

I’ve read so many finance books over the years, but very few truly “get” what it means to be both creative and entrepreneurial. This one does - and it does so brilliantly. It’s not just about managing money; it’s about changing your mindset and relationship with money in a way that feels supportive instead of restrictive. Right away, I felt like the author understood how hard it is for creative people to balance the need to do important work with the need to make a steady income. The best part? There is no judgment; only clear, caring, and useful advice.

The most important thing to me about the method was how useful it is without being dry or too technical. It's great that it's based on the well-known Profit First plan but has been changed to fit the needs of creative business owners. The way the book is put together makes it easy to understand, even if you've never been good with numbers. The method is broken down into steps that are easy to follow, and examples from real life helped me see how I could use it in my own business. It’s rare to find a finance book that gives you both inspiration and instruction in equal measure.

Another thing I really loved was how much attention the author gave to mindset - specifically, the internal narratives many creatives carry around money. Instead of glossing over the emotional side of financial decision-making, he dives right in with honesty and empathy. That was quite comforting. Not only did I leave with plans for how to handle my income and costs, but I also felt like there were new possibilities for what my business could become.

By the end of the book, I felt grounded, motivated, and, most importantly, capable. I actually wanted to open my bank accounts and start making the changes the book recommends. It gave me tools to reduce the financial anxiety that so often clouds my creative process, and helped me realize that profitability doesn’t mean selling out - it means building something sustainable and joyful.

Profit First for Creatives: Redefining the Creativity/Money Paradigm is more than just a business book. It’s a permission slip to take yourself seriously as both an artist and an entrepreneur and a practical guide to making that dream financially viable. I’ll be recommending it to every creative visionary I know.
