Editorial Book Review:
By Marcos Buttler
It was fun to read Legend of Serpentine: The Lost Kingdom because it took me into a world full of excitement and family ties. As soon as I started reading, I was drawn into Bolt's journey. I felt all of his wonder, confusion, and determination as he started to learn about his past. Bolt and his siblings, Fury and Rose, have been hidden far from their home since they were mere eggs, with only a faint whisper of a tragic past. Their father, Whirlwind, shielded them from the dangers posed by their sinister mother, Snowstorm—a mystery that hooked me right away.
The way Bolt's trip is driven by a mix of mystery and discovery throughout this novel appealed most to me. A mystery man approaches him and suggests he is a part of something far more than himself, which sets off a fervent search for explanations. Bolt's character is so brilliantly rendered; he is fearless but doubtful, strong but wary. Not only because of his objective, but also because of his genuineness—that he feels as though he is constantly juggling actual decisions and risks.
Along the way, Bolt meets characters who become his friends and allies, adding warmth and humor to a story already rich with tension. Every interaction raises the stakes, so every difficulty seems vital. The world-building here is amazing as well; I could almost feel the magical settings as Bolt overcame each challenge with a mix of terror and will. This is a trip full of emotion, and I eagerly anticipated how Bolt's decisions would affect not only his own but also his family's heritage.
There’s a strong theme of family and resilience here, and I was moved by the depth of loyalty and courage woven throughout the story. Cook has crafted a story that isn’t just about fantastical battles and hidden powers—it’s also about personal growth and facing one’s demons, both figurative and literal. Legend of Serpentine: The Lost Kingdom is an enthralling trip for anybody who enjoys heart-felt fantasy. It's a story that will stay with us long after we've finished reading it, reminding us of the power we may discover inside ourselves and in others we care about.
