Editorial Book Review:

By Ricardo Law

Abundance by Alan Chan transports readers to a world of industrial rivalry, space exploration, and ethical dilemmas. A former astronaut named Charles "Chuck" Sorrel is brought in to look into an accident involving the first commercial asteroid mining mission. As Chuck dives into this mystery, he uncovers layers of secrets, conspiracies, and clashing objectives between major multinational corporations, all while trying to come to grips with his own previous actions. Alan Chan's novel Abundance transports readers to the thrilling realm of space exploration, corporate struggle, and moral quandaries.

Chan’s vision of the near future feels both tangible and chillingly plausible. The work masterfully analyzes themes of corporate greed, environmental decline, and the struggle to plunder outer space resources. The characters, particularly Chuck, are multifaceted, blending personal shortcomings with professional abilities. As Chuck navigates international power struggles and personal demons, readers are immersed in a world of geopolitical intrigue. The dialogue and action propel the story forward, and the descriptions of advanced space technology—grounded in real scientific theories—add to the book's rich texture.

Abundance distinguishes itself in its capacity to combine provocative issues about the future of mankind in space with great action. Together with corporate exploitation, the ethical consequences of space exploration and artificial intelligence technology are closely examined and provide readers not only with an exciting narrative but also a more general contemplation on the future of human migration outside Earth. For those who enjoy hard science fiction with a healthy dose of corporate espionage and moral complexity, this book will hit all the right notes.

Chan’s writing style is clear and engaging, keeping readers hooked from beginning to end. The novel’s pacing ensures that the tension never falters, offering a perfect blend of introspective moments and pulse-pounding action. Whether you're a science fiction aficionado or someone interested in the future of space exploration, Abundance provides a gripping and thought-provoking experience.

About the Author

Alan Chan

Alan Chan started out writing short stories as a teenager, got dazzled by the visual arts and ended up spending nearly three decades creating visual effects on Oscar-winning movies like "Titanic", "Lord of The Rings" and "Alice in Wonderland". Occasionally he moonlights as some sort of writer-director hyphenate, shooting short films and indie features – as evidenced by all the shiny awards on display in his home office, next to the LEGO Millennium Falcon and Eagle Transporter model.

Decades of listening to the voices inside his head have crystallized his optimistic-yet-pragmatic futurist tendencies. His Apollo era childhood, a voracious appetite for sci-fi and a penchant for finding meaning in everything has contributed to this circle-of-life moment - a return to writing.

Alan enjoys the act of stepping into other people’s heads and is planning to squeeze more wordsmithing time into his movie-magic-making workday.
